Get over it, anti-Trumpers, he’s never going to prison even if he’s convicted of a felony. There’s no way DeSantis or Haley will get the Republican nomination unless one of two things happen.
The first, simply, is that Trump dies. Being terminally ill and on life support wouldn’t be enough as he’d still get the nomination.
The other is more problematic. He’d have to become so blatantly psychotic that it would be impossible for anyone except the equally psychotic to deny that he was stark raving mad.
Interestingly, Trump warned of “bedlam in the country” if he loses the election while being prosecuted (read Axios article).
This is from the American Heritage Dictionary:
- A place or situation of noisy uproar and confusion.
- An insane asylum.
- [capitalized] The hospital of St. Mary of Bethlehem in London, originally a priory, founded about 1247, but afterward used as an asylum for lunatics.
The word “bedlam“, meaning uproar and confusion, is derived from the hospital’s nickname. Although the hospital became a modern psychiatric facility, historically it was representative of the worst excesses of asylums in the era of lunacy reform.
Patients in what were called insane asylums at the time were figuratively and sometimes literally bouncing off the walls. The paranoid raved and ranted about being persecuted, thus making them something like Donald Trump except they heard voices in their mind that they believed were real.
The fly in the ointment for the stark raving mad scenario is that, thanks to the very first anti-psychotic medications like Thorazine, psychiatric hospitals were transformed in the 1950’s to facilities where most patients were stablized on medication and had their symptoms significantly reduced. Many were able to return to live in the community in group facilities.
If Trump actually became blatantly psychotic and his rants went from being based in fact to, for example, his screaming that his enemies were really pod people from another planet, he would have to get psychiatric help. The newer anti-psychotic medications are better than the older ones which had visible and unpleasant side effects. Today, many people can have a psychotic episode and with treatment return to normal functioning in a fairly short time.
Thus even my second possibility is iffy.
To be rid of Trump he might have to die and despite his poor health habits it seems that this isn’t likely to happen.
