The Right-Wing Immigration Panic is a Bigot Baiting Lie, by Hal Brown, MSW

There are 333 million people in the United States and we grow by a million legal and illegal immigrants a year. This is a growth of .01 percent. We also have 3,533,038 square miles of land.

In addtion to the above, in 2022 the US had its lowest unemployment rate ever (reference).

The issue of immigation across our southern border is one of the top and most divisive political issues in the country. While providing for the health and well-being of those trying to cross the border is a challenging immediate humanitarian issue, the eventual integration of this number of new residents into society is anything but insurmountable. Quite the opposite, while it would take a few years the country can easily handle a million new residents annually.

The hysterical panic over criminals and “undesirables” invading the country is based on right-wing propaganda. It is based on racism.

Trump triples down on “poisoning the blood” when in fact the United States 1.6% of youth and 3.6% use opioids and lesser percentages use heroin and methaphetamines (reference). Their blood, so to speak, is already poisioned. Their blood being poisoned had little if anything to do with drug dealers smuggling narcotics across the Rio Grande in backbacks.

Consider this from 2019:

Cocaine seizures on U.S. borders, for instance, regularly measure in tons, making it impractical to have individual migrants ferry it across. Instead, dealers prefer to smuggle drugs into the country via legal ports of entry, which allow them to bring in high-value substances that are more easily hidden.

“The majority of the illegal drugs that enter the United States through the U.S.-Mexico border cross through formal Points of Entry,” said Joel Martinez, a Mexico research associate for the Center for American Progress “The drugs that cross in between are very minimal and non-expensive products like marijuana. All the cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine — they cross through formal ports because they’re easier to hide […in] freight comp and assorted vehicles.”

Think Progress

Aside from the humanitarian crisis, which the Republicans rarely allude to, the panic is a manufactured issue.

The fact of the matter is that about 40% of Amercians, to varying degrees, are more comfortable with a country where White people are in the majority. This is what MAGA means.

While many of us won’t live to see 2043, this is the year which it has been predicted that the United States will no longer be a country with White people in the majority (reference) .

If a million non-White people don’t move here perhaps the inevitable can be pushed back a few years, but sometime two decades from now we will truly be a multi-ethnic country.
