Update: Not only did Ron DeSantis break predetermined debate rules by using material he brought a props to the debate by showing the poop map, in defending parents rights he showed a graphic portion of the book “Gender Queer” to hammer his point. Read article.

The debate which was hosted by Sean Hannity was aired on Fox News. I don’t know how many people viewed it, but I doubt it was must-see television. It’s the kind of political programming that poltical junkies may tune into but most people would rather watch pure entertainment shows. Those participating in such debates and interviews hope for a breakout moment which will be repeated on other shows.

The debate between Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom would have been a nothing burger but DeSantis had his McCarthy Moment prepared.

When Gov. Newsom said “Ron has literally the worst mental health system in America. Forgive me outside of Mississippi and Texas…” he was ready to counter this. Ron DeSantis reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sheet of paper. You can watch this video clip here. You can see how Newsom reacted.

It supposedly showed all the locations in San Francisco where human feces were found. This led to the clever title of the following HUFFPOST article which had numerous posts on X which mocked DeSantis for this stunt.

The California governor couldn’t help but laugh after DeSantis showcased the poop plots on Fox News.

I think the feces map was just chocolate pudding spread on a piece of paper. But I can’t prove it.

This is the part about feces:

One of the most jarring aspects of the debate was that throughout, DeSantis kept bizarrely talking about feces. That’s right, feces. This is actually an old right wing obsession going back to the civil rights marches, the Vietnam war protests and most recently Occupy Wall Street. There are always tales of rampant public defecation and they can’t stop talking about it. DeSantis seems to have a particular fetish about this feces problem as illustrated in this bizarre moment: (video clip)

There is a real map of places where human feces were found in San Francisco. Depending on the version one looks at it can look far worse than it is.

The map shows reports made by individual reporting them from 2008-2015.

Back to Joe McCarthy, he was successful in achieving his goal of causing a national hysteria over communists having infiltrated the government, the arts, and show buinsess and creating what was called “the Red Scare” and bringing the term “McCarthyism” into the poltical lexicon.

We now have Trumpism as a term. I seriously doubt there will ever be an entry on Wikipedia describing DeSantisism. I looked it up. The closest Wiki page is for Antidisestablishmentarianism. Oddly, DeSantis might have advocated for this:

• A position that advocates that a state church (the “established church”) should continue to receive government patronage, rather than be disestablished (i.e., be separated from the state)

Addendum:

It is true that California is the worst state in the nation as far as homelessness and that Florida has improved in this regard. However they are still the 10th worst state. DeSantis could have forgone the dramatic poop map reveal and attacked California for their ranking and taken credit for improving the conditions for homeless people in Florida.
