My origial title waqs “Can Judge Cannon save Trump’s sorry ass from prison” and featured this photo as tweeted by Cher (and used frequently in the media much no doubt to Triump’s dismay):

I post the above photo (click to enlarge) because of all the photos of him that I think the preening narcissist Trump wishes hadn’t be taken this has to be on the top of his list along with some of his rear view golf photos (see Staring at Trump’s Body, What Do You See? Artist Jonathan Horowitz Has Produced a Hellish Presidential Portrait).

If you try to use actual photos of Judge Eileen Cannan with a Google Image search you can find only a few:

There are cartoons of her but fortunately caricaturist DonkeyHotey made the best version with his caricature (top of page) for me to use in this blog.
It was used in the Who, What, Why website article The Only Special Master Judge Cannon Knows Is Donald Trump by Klaus Marre published 9/18/22.
We all know that the Trump tactic is to attempt to delay the Florida trial as much as possible with a sycophant judge so he can become president and fire Jack Smith and make this and his other federal case disappear.
There is debate as to whether Cannon going along with all the Trump attempts to delay the trial (watch Meidas Touch Video Judge Cannon FALLS Into HER OWN TRAP, ACCIDENTALLY Keeps SCREWING Trump here) will work because she’s trapped herself since she has no control over when the so-far unsceduled Gerogia case will go to trail. I’m not sure I fully undertsand this but this isn’t what I want to address here.
Thiis is my point:
Time is not on Trump’s side. The presidential election is a full year away. Even if he wins he won’t become president until Jan. 25, 2025. I’ve seen pundits say his strategy is to delay, delay, delay and at the same time to deny, deny, deny, add to that to deflect, deflect, deflect and attack, attack, attack.
But Trump can’t speed up the clock and turn almost 15 months into just a few. Within this time span there are two federal cases he’d be able to make go away. In addtion to the Florida documents case where the evidence against him is overwhelming there is the D.C. election interference case where Judge Tanya Chutkan is the presiding judge. Suffice to point out, she’s no Judge Cannon.
It seems likely that at some point Cannon, who seems immune to criticism and even being offically censured, will be presiding over a trial where every attempt to defy precdent and bend rules in Trump’s favor will be scrutinized by the press and public. Even if she attempts to do whatever she can to help him there are still the rules of trial which I she must abide by.
I want to believe that Jack Smith took this into consideration when he decided not to ask for her to be removed when she was first assigned the case. I want to believe he has factored into his strategy everything this judge could possibly do to help the defendant and undermine his case.
It seems to me that while the horrifying prospect of Trump winning the election keeps me up at night I am trying my damnedest to think of some optimistic scenarios. What happens if Trump is convicted of a federal crime prior or just after the election which he wins. Presumably as president he can pardon himself but what happens during the time after he’s convicted and sentenced, hopefully to prison (home confinement wouldn’t be fair if no other convicted criminal would get this luxury), and has to be sworn in on Jan. 25, 2025 from standing in front of the prefab house for him and his Secret Service detail in prison?
